Coach Code of Conduct
As a coach representing East Kilbride Youth Club, you play a vital role in shaping the experience, development and wellbeing of every child in your care. By coaching at EKYC, you agree to uphold the following standards:
Our Expectations
1. Put the Children First
- Prioritise enjoyment, learning and development over results.
- Create a safe, positive and inclusive environment for all players.
- Ensure every child feels valued, supported and part of the team.
2. Lead by example
- Model respect, fairness and good sportsmanship at all times.
- Treat all players, parents, referees, volunteers and opposition teams with dignity.
- Demonstrate calmness and composure, especially in challenging moments.
3. Promote Positive Coaching
- Encourage effort, improvement and teamwork.
- Provide constructive feedback that builds confidence and resilience.
- Recognise that mistakes are part of learning and help players grow from them.
4. Create a Safe and Supportive Environment
- Follow all EKYC Child Wellbeing & Protection policies and procedures.
- Ensure training and match activities are age‑appropriate and safe.
- Never use or tolerate offensive, insulting or abusive language or behaviour.
5. Communicate Well
- Keep parents and players informed about training, matches and expectations.
- Listen to concerns and respond respectfully and appropriately.
- Work collaboratively with other EKYC coaches and officials.
6. Respect the Game
- Respect referees and their decisions, and encourage players to do the same.
- Promote fair play and integrity in every session and match.
- Remember that the spirit of youth football matters more than the scoreline.
7. Seek Support When Needed
If you have concerns about a child’s wellbeing, behaviour, or anything that affects safety:
- Speak confidentially with your team’s Child Wellbeing & Protection Officer
- Or the Club Child Wellbeing & Protection Officer
- Or another EKYC official if that feels more comfortable
Communication keeps children safe — never hesitate to raise a concern.
If the Code Is Not Followed
Failure to meet these expectations may result in:
- A verbal warning or formal discussion
- Temporary suspension from coaching duties
- Removal from coaching roles within EKYC
A Final Reminder
EKYC is built on volunteers who give their time, energy and care.
The club exists for the children — their enjoyment, their development, their memories.
It is not about us — it is about them.
